Quilting is simply the method of connecting several fabric related materials together with wadding and batting for making a flat quilt. It can be made with help of hand, machine or use the quilting system by long arm. Be it any technique the most popular way is that one has to use needle and thread to merge all the layers of materials in completing the final product.
A simple quilt design will have basically three layers: A backing, quilt top and insulation. In this basic quilting a needle and thread has to pass through all three layers and come back to the top so that another stitch can be done.
This process id done back and forth while running through whole of the quilt and make sure that all its pieces are sewed properly. Running stitches has been the favorite type of stitch for the quilters as they show beautiful pattern and are neat to look at. Quilts are mainly used for clothing, wall decor as beds and other different attire and also in various products in textile.
Basics of quilting Design
The basic steps involved in quilting are:
Piecing and Layering: it is a process wherein the quilt top is sewed. A top of quilt can be squares or small strips that are set into different patterns. This is the most creative and colorful part of quilting. These pieces are called as blocks and these blocks are sewed together to create a complete quilt top. This is done in two manners either you lay all the pieces together with edges touching or one can use sashing that is small strip of fabric, these are sewn along the edge. You can also use one complete piece instead of using blocks.
Quilting: after all the layers insulation, top and backing are sewed together quilting follows. In quilting stitching is done in a manner that is decorative and it makes the beautiful design onto the top of the quilt. Sometime you will see that when blocks are not used and one single piece is used this quilting stitches form a beautiful pattern.
Binding: it is the final step in completing the quilt. This is done using trim fabric pieces to add the edges.
How to start quilting?
First see what type of quilting you want to do. If you are doing hand quilting you will require a needle, thread and thimble to protect your finger from the needles .These are important equipment to complete quilting. Other than this, you need a frame and a hop to hold the fabric tightly while you work. However, if you are going for machine quilting you will require equipment like thread, safety pins, a darning foot and a walking foot.
The backing materials, insulation and fabrics are the things that are needed in all types of quilting. Now that you are aware that, ‘what is quilting?’ you can definitely try your hand in it.
